Classical concert planned in Yakima

The Yakima Symphony Orchestra will perform a gorgeous concert in Yakima soon.

The upcoming show is titled “From the Danube to the Moldau,” referencing two of the rivers that will be referred in the pieces of music that will be played.

The planned program comprises the waltz “On the Beautiful Blue Danube” by Johann Strauss Jr., Mozart’s “Piano Concerto No. 20 in D Minor, K.466,” “The River” by Duke Ellington, and “The Moldau” by Bedřich Smetana. Yerin Kim is the pianist, with Lawrence Golan conducting the performance.

The performance is a journey through classical music’s beautiful rivers, with the familiar waltz and the piece by Smetana framing the other two compositions. “The Blue Danube” is world famous; the Vienna Philharmonic plays it at their annual New Year’s concert, and film goers will recognize it from Kubrik’s “2001: A Space Odyssey.”

“The Moldau” is a musical description of the flowing Czech river, while “The River” blends swing and classical music into a ballet score with jazz accents. Finally, Mozart wrote his concerto in Vienna near the Danube, bringing the theme of the concert full circle.

The concert will be held at the Capitol Theatre on November 22, starting at 7.30 pm. The theater is located at 19 South 3rd Street. Events such as this will benefit if organizers work with poster printing to create colorful advertisements that will support the performance.
