Yakima city is thinking of making changes to sections of Fairbanks Avenue and Jerome Avenue near Garfield Elementary School, and has scheduled a public meeting to discuss the project.
As part of the Safe Routes to Schools initiative, Garfield Elementary School, along with the Yakima School District and the City of Yakima, are proposing to change Fairbanks Avenue from a two-way street to a one-way westbound street on the stretch from 6th Avenue and Custer Avenue. Likewise, they would like to change Jerome Avenue from two-way to one-way eastbound, also between 6th Avenue and Custer Avenue. The goal of the changes is to make the area safer for pedestrians.
In addition, the city plans to build transportation and pedestrian improvements near Garfield Elementary. These include installing a new gutter and curb, installing ramps, and adding sidewalks. The improvements are also part of the Safe Routes to School Program administrated by Washington State.
The information meeting is scheduled for May 29, from 5.00 pm until 6.00 pm, in the gym of Garfield Elementary School, located on North 6th Avenue. The City of Yakima will host the evening, and there is time for members of the public to make comments. If they cannot attend the meeting, Yakima residents are invited to send their ideas to the Yakima City Clerk's Office at City Hall. Organizers of such meetings can use flyer printing to create an agenda to distribute to attendees.
