Yakima reminds residents of snow policies

A recent snowfall prompted Yakima to remind its residents of its policies to deal with snow removal, and the difficulties of winter in general.

As in many municipalities, snow removal measures depend on snowfall. In Yakima, once snow accumulation has reached three inches, the city will start plowing, beginning with major arterial routes, as well as streets near critical locations such as hospitals and schools; it will also plow hills. Yakima invites residents who are concerned about conditions on their street to call 509-576-6713.

Yakima also reminds property owners that they are responsible for removing any snow from the sidewalks in front of their businesses or homes. The city also suggests that snow should be shoveled immediately after the fall, before ice has a chance to form. Residents who are disabled, elderly, or who have any condition that make shoveling snow dangerous for them are asked to call The Office of Neighborhood Development Services (ONDS) at 509-575-6101. Officials addressing matters like this can use flyer printing to inform as many residents as possible.

The Public Works Department also offered advice for staying safe during the winter months. Residents shouldn't drive during a storm unless it's absolutely necessary; and they are also asked to clear snow from around fire hydrants. If their home or business is located on a corner, they're asked to clear sidewalks ramps so pedestrians can cross safely.
