Yakima race aims to burn off leftovers

The Leftover Turkey Trot will return to Yakima this November, providing a chance for runners to test themselves, benefit a good cause, and perhaps make up for Thanksgiving indulgence.

The Turkey Trot is a five-kilometer road race aimed at families and casual runners. Participants can run or walk the racecourse, which runs throughout Sarg Hubbard Park. The event encourages fun such as group costumes and pets in attendance, with a costume contest running alongside the race. All attendees will get a Turkey Trot medal to signal their efforts. The 2021 event is the twelfth-annual race, suggesting that this event has connected with Yakima residents looking to keep fit.

In addition to fitness, money raised by the Leftover Turkey Trot will benefit two local charities. The Yakima Greenway Foundation aims to preserve the natural space surrounding the Naches and Yakima Rivers, while Camp Prime Time is a non-profit organization that provides a summer camp experience for children with special needs. Runs, marathons, and other fitness events, often using methods like poster printing and social media to raise awareness, can be a crucial part of fundraising for organizations such as these. The Greenway also uses annual events like a Fish-In and family scavenger hunt to raise funds.

The 2021 edition of the Leftover Turkey Trot will take place on the morning of November 25 at Sarg Hubbard Park.
