Yakima to cool down with ice-cream this spring

Winegars, an ice-cream shop based in Ellensburg, plans to open a Yakima location in spring this year.

The enterprise will take over space in the Lee Semon building on East Yakima Avenue, formerly occupied by Royal Sports. Jason Eaton, who owns the Semon building, made the announcement recently.

Eaton had been selling frozen yogurt, but decided to stop doing so when he learned Winegars wanted to find a location in Yakima. Instead, he worked with them to find the perfect spot for the new store. It is anticipated that construction will start soon.

Winegars' ice cream can already be found in several places in Yakima and the Yakima Valley, including Washington Fruit Place and the Yakima Museum Soda Fountain. However, the Semon building will be the first dedicated Winegars store in the city.

Winegars is a family business that Phoebe and Truman Winegar started in 1949. It is now officially called Winegars Homemade Ice Cream and Coffee, and Kori Winegar says that within five years, it hopes to have stores open in five separate cities. The company is known for the richness of its ice cream—which it packs with ingredients like fruits and nuts—as well as the names it gives its flavors, such as Coconuttery Swirl and Kevinlicious.
