The city of Yakima is planning a celebration to honor Earth Day.
Earth Day was created in 1970 by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson, who wanted to combine the energy of the student anti-Vietnam War protests with deepening public awareness of water and air pollution. Nelson envisioned the first Earth Day as a teach-in across campuses in the U.S., and it grew from there.
Yakima’s Earth Day celebration is packed with activities, although final plans are still being considered. Artisans, vendors of sustainable goods, live music, and food trucks are planned, with specific vendors and artists to be announced.
Among the activities are a display of electric vehicles, where people can learn about personal electric vehicles and eco-friendly cars. At the Recycle Zone, people will be able to turn in their recycling and learn the next steps in the recycling process.
Other zones include EDY’s Art Zone, The Book Exchange, a Composting Zone, Story Trail, a Game Zone for children, a Self-Care Zone, a Party Zone, and a Pet Zone where people can learn about pet rescue and care. They can also make a Sun Catcher, take home a free plant, and learn about lamprey eels in the Slime Zone.
Earth Day Yakima is slated for Saturday, April 26, from 10.00 am until 3.00 pm at Sarg Hubbard Park. Organizers of events of this type may decide to use flyer printing to create a handout with a map and list of vendors.
