East Yakima getting new sidewalks

School will be starting soon, and Yakima is putting in new sidewalks in East Yakima in time for the start of classes.

Dulce Gutierrez, the city’s assistant mayor, is also the chair of the Yakima City Council’s Public Safety Committee, and says that keeping children safe and improving sidewalks are two of the council’s priorities.

The sidewalks being installed are near schools and in neighborhoods in East Yakima, in Council District 2. This district includes Washington Middle School and Adams Elementary School. Among the improvements to the sidewalks is the installation of ramps that meet the standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The project, which carries a price tag of $357,000, should be finished before school starts in August.

The construction of the sidewalks is part of the Safe Routes to Schools effort. The program is a nationwide attempt to make it safe for children to get to and from school, either by walking or riding their bikes. The Safe Routes project will last until at least 2019, when work will be done in Council District 1, which includes Garfield Elementary School. McClure Elementary School in Council District 3 is also slated to have work done nearby. This will include new sidewalks, Signs, ramps, and signals. The city would like to have all the work done before the school year 2019-2020.

Officials working on projects like this could contact Print shops to create stickers showing kids safe routes to school.
