Two Woodinville organizations, the Rotary Club and the Woodinville Farmers Market, will receive the grant money they requested, after having been initially turned down. The two will use the grants for events they plan in 2017.
The first grant of $3,000 goes to the Rotary Club for its winter coat program, while the Market will receive $500 to put toward its community play zone effort. The grants are part of a city program that has a total of $15,000 available to help funds events in Woodinville.
The earlier refusal to fund the two reflected officials' belief the programs might be better suited to apply for funds under a different program – one that supports grants for human services.
In another reversal, council members also agreed to give funds to a BMX challenge to be held at Rotary Community Park. They also decided to increase funds for another event at the park, the Rotary Skate Challenge, and more than doubled a grant made earlier to the YMCA for its Celebrate Woodinville program. James Evans, the deputy mayor, encouraged the council to increase the Celebrate Woodinville funds, saying it was the city's premiere event.
Six organizations applied for the seven grants available in 2017, which total approximately $35,000.
Efforts like this can benefit if officials work with a newsletter printing company to create a newsletter for community members, detailing local issues.
