Walk for good cause in Vancouver

An upcoming event at Evergreen High School will be the first of its kind, and is kicking off efforts to bring awareness to a developmental disorder.

The SMS Champions Walk-A-Thon is a day full of fun where attendees can run, walk, or just hang out, make new friends, and learn about SMS. The event is suitable for people of all ages, and offers both a One-Mile Walk, and a 5K walk, in addition to coffee, food, other refreshments, and yard games. Local vendors are sponsoring the activities.

The walk is in support of PRISMS, which stands for Parents and Researchers Interested in Smith-Magenis Syndrome. PRISMS is a non-profit organization that provides information and support to people with SMS. It sponsors research and encourages partnerships with professionals to increase understanding and awareness of SMS.

Smith-Magenis Syndrome (SMS) is a neurological disorder that occurs in approximately 1 in 15,000 to 1 in 25,000 births, making it a rare condition. It causes a specific pattern of developmental, behavioral, and physical features, such as a distinct gait and vision problems.

The event is scheduled for September 7 at Evergreen High School on Northeast 18th Street. To register, people should select either the one mile or 5K, the amount of their donation, and the size of the T-Shirts they need for those in their group. When they organize events like this, planners will often use banner printing to create Signs marking the courses.
