A popular anti-hero will be on stage in Vancouver soon.
The Magenta Theatre in downtown Vancouver will present a comedy version of the classic horror story “Dracula,” opening the run in September.
“Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors” started as a radio play that first aired in 2020, with a cast that included John Stamos. The Maltz Jupiter Theatre in Jupiter, Florida, commissioned it as a play, and it was further workshopped at the Segal Center in Montreal; Albany, New York’s Capital Rep; and the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre before opening at New World Stages, an off-Broadway venue, in September 2023. It ran there until January 2024, then moved to the Menier Chocolate Factory in London for two months in 2025, and now is back to scare laughs out of audiences in the United States.
The production follows the plot of the Bram Stoker novel in that it involves Dracula, Jonathan Harker and his fiancée Lucy Westfeldt, and Lucy’s sister Mina, but then it goes rogue. Critics describe the play as a mix of gothic vampire horror, Monty Python, Mel Brooks, and the film “The 39 Steps.” The vampire hunter in this production is a woman, Doctor Jean Van Helsing, and the play features quick changes, clever puns, and a small, talented cast playing more than a dozen characters between them.
