An upcoming concert will add warmth to winter in Vancouver.
A performance by the Southwest Washington Wind Symphony will feature guest artists. West Virginia University’s Jeff Siegfried on the saxophone, plus the principal tubist for the Oregon Symphony, JáTtik Clark. The two musicians will perform Luis Cardoso’s “Double Concertino for Tenor Saxophone and Tuba.” Patrick Murphy, who is the Director of Bands and Associate Professor of Music at Portland University, is slated to conduct.
Cardoso is a Portuguese composer, instructor, conductor, and performer. He is a multi-award winner, has arranged approximately 650 works, and created about 50 original compositions, most for wind band.
Several other works are on the program including “Viva Musica” by Alfred Reed, Leonard Bernstein’s “Slava!”, the “Colonial Song” by Percy Grainger, and more. Reed composed his work, which is a celebration of the joy of teaching music, in 1984. Leonard Bernstein wrote his piece in honor of Mstislav Rostropovich's first season as conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra. Percy Grainger was famous as both an arranger and composer, and wrote so many songs there is no accurate count.
The concert is scheduled for March 1, from 3.00 pm until 4.00 pm. The venue is Union High School at 6201 NW Friberg-Strunk Street in Vancouver. Admission to the concert is free. When they schedule events like this, organizers can use brochure printing to create programs that explain the works and contain biographies of the composers and performers.
