Special event in Vancouver celebrates nature

Vancouver was named a Tree City USA, and this is the 36th year in a row it has been honored. Its commitment to forestry is reflected in an upcoming free event for everyone.

The Old Apple Tree Festival takes place at the Old Apple Tree Park. The park is just east of the I-5 bridge, and about a fifth of a mile west of the Vancouver Land Bridge.

The festival celebrates the Pacific Northwest’s oldest apple tree, which was planted in 1826 at Fort Vancouver. Local gardeners will be happy, as Urban Forestry Commissioners will be giving away cuttings from the tree throughout the event. However, the number of cuttings is limited and will be distributed until there are no more available.

In addition to the cuttings, organizers will have food for sale, kids’ activities, apple sales and tastings, cider pressing, and live music. Walking tours of the Land Bridge, the Fort Vancouver Historic Orchard, and Fort Vancouver Village are planned. Local bands including the JT Wise Band and The Ottomatics will perform.

To enjoy the community cider pressing, people will need to bring apples and a clean container for their fresh cider. Apples and containers will be available for purchase at the festival. It takes about 15 pounds of apples to make a quart of cider.

The festival is scheduled for October 4, from 11.00 am until 3.00 pm. The park is located at 112 Columbia Way. Events like this can be enhanced when organizers use banner printing to create decorations.
