Vancouver's Terminal 1 wins initial approval

On May 25, 2017, Sharon Rice, a hearing examiner for the Vancouver City Council, approved plans devised by the Port of Vancouver for its waterfront development. The port's proposed Terminal 1 project would site a hotel, offices, apartments, and a public market beside the Columbia River.

Winning Rice's approval makes it more likely the project will be approved by the city council when it comes before that body. Administrative agencies such as a city council may appoint hearing examiners to oversee various types of hearings, but final approval of any project rests with the council itself, which must give its okay before any construction begins.

Plans for the waterfront development have been ongoing for about two years, and port officials were glad to have Rice's okay, since it will make it more likely the project will garner final approval.

Rice's recommendation focused on plans to build near the river, where the port intends to put 200,000 square feet of space that can be used for commercial purposes; retail spaces totaling 62,000 square feet; and 355 residential units. The centerpiece of the development is a hotel, The AC by Marriott.

The city council plans to hold a hearing on June 19, 2017, and invites the public to comment on the project at that time.
