Vancouver welcomes new clothing store

H&M, a retailer based in Sweden, opened an outlet in Vancouver recently.

According to an article in The Columbian, the store took over the ground floor of the former Nordstrom space in the Vancouver Mall, and had approximately 50 people lined up at 10:00 am for the noon opening.

The first 100 shoppers in line before the store opened received vouchers worth amounts from $10 to $300 they could spend opening day. According to The Columbian, one shopper presented with a $200 voucher struggled to spend it, even though her shopping bag was full.

H&M, which was founded in Sweden in 1947, now has thousands of stores throughout the world, including 485 in the United States. The stores carry men’s, women’s and children’s clothing, and the new location brought 20 jobs to Vancouver.

Shoppers said they were glad H&M had opened in Vancouver, since the next closest store is in Portland. Students in particular like the chain; Emma Ginter, a student at Hockinson High School, said it’s possible to get “really nice clothes” for under $20.

H&M also has a recycling program. Customers can drop off used clothing from any store, not just H&M, and receive a voucher that entitles them to take 15% off a purchase.

Companies like these can benefit if they create colorful Banners to welcome shoppers into the locations when new stores open.
