Vancouver welcomes new art installation

The Uptown Apartments, a new complex in downtown Vancouver that is almost ready for its first tenants, got an extra boost recently when a public art piece, ‘Bubbles’, was installed on the sidewalk next to the building.

The piece was created by Jennifer Corio and her husband Dave Frei, who together are known as Cobalt Designworks. Frei builds the pieces Corio designs, and their work has been commissioned by a number of cities in the area, including Bremerton and Mount Vernon, Washington.

Both Corio and Frei were on site recently as the sculpture was installed, and considered the placement of the artwork carefully. The piece was commissioned by Cascadia Development Partners, which built the building under the requirements that the piece be playful, colorful, and of a scale that appealed to pedestrians. The duo also wanted to place the sculpture where it would not interfere with people getting out of their cars, and where it could also be enjoyed by pedestrians.

Bubbles features a number of circles of various sizes, and is an abstract design finished in a powder-blue color. It was the winning design of four that Corio presented to Cascadia, and is approximately 5.5 feet in width, weighing roughly 400lb.

Improvements like this can benefit if city officials work with a brochure printing company help describe the artworks on display, and where they are located.
