Vancouver to spring into gardening action

It will soon be time for spring planting in Vancouver’s community gardens.

Vancouver Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services is the organization that manages the Community Garden Program. Participating in a community garden allows people to enjoy the satisfaction of growing their own food and flowers, even when they do not have space for a garden at home. There are community gardens at five different city parks – Ellsworth Road Garden, Fruit Valley Park Garden, LeRoy Haagen Community Park Garden, Campus Garden, and Marshall Community Park Garden. Each offers a variety of plot types and sizes.

Officials note that they will not assign plots or share information about them before stringing and staking preparations are complete. This means anyone who has registered will not be able to learn about their plot until the season starts. If anyone attempts to plant their garden before the official opening, those plants may be removed by staff.

Those who are interested in obtaining a plot may register online, by phone, or in person. Anyone who chooses to register online or by phone will be required to pay by credit card. In addition, people registering for the first time may have only one plot.

The gardens will open on April 24, weather permitting. If inclement weather makes it impossible for gardeners to prepare the plots, the opening may be delayed. Managers of outdoor locations like this can use banner printing to create appropriate, weatherproof signage.
