The City of Vancouver has opened registration for a unique opportunity that will interest those who enjoy getting outdoors.
Interested parties are now able to reserve a plot in a community garden. There are five such gardens in the city available to those who are interested in growing their own food or flowers, but do not have sufficient space to do so at their residence. The five are the Fruit Valley Park Garden, Ellsworth Road Garden, Campus Garden, LeRoy Haagen Community Park Garden, and the Marshall Community Park Garden. There are several plot sizes available—10 x 10 feet; 20 x 20 feet; and raised beds.
Although meeting people, building a community, and exchanging gardening tips are part of the fun of projects like this, there are some restrictions in place, and everyone must follow them. Participants are asked not to come to the garden if they feel ill, or any time within three days of becoming ill; to wash or sanitize their hands before entering and leaving the garden; to maintain a minimum distance of six feet from others; restrict time in the garden; and minimize use of surfaces such as tools, latches, gates, and others. Finally, gardeners need to wash their hands and anything they bring home from the garden. Flyer printing can be used to provide handouts for participants in projects like this.
The planting season starts April 24; however, dates are dependent on weather and health guidelines.
