Next year, Vancouver residents might see more street sweeping, better-maintained medians, and additional police officers.
City staffers have proposed adding an additional $39.3m as part of a year-end supplemental budget. The additional money would be added to the city's biennial 2015-2016 budget, and pay for about 13 additional city employees and other expenditures.
The Vancouver city council will consider whether or not to adopt the supplemental budget after holding a public hearing about it. Each year, the city adjusts its budgets to reflect changes in expenditures and revenues that have occurred after the biennial budget is approved. This time, the $39.3m contains $34.8m in capital funds, and $4.5m in operating funds.
The proposed new employees will include six police officers. Hiring them would allow the department time to recruit and train officers to take over as current police retire. It takes approximately a year for new officers to become qualified to perform their duties alone, and the police academy is six months long, after which officers train in the field for about five months. At present, the six new officers are expected to serve only until December 31, 2016. After that, the department's staffing needs will be reviewed.
City officials might consider creating Brochures about the new hires, and Mailing them to residents to help explain the city's concern for their safety.
