Vancouver is overhauling Water Station 1, and the project is entering its second phase soon. The city has awarded a contract to a local company for the upcoming work.
Rotschy Inc. was the winner of the bidding process, entering a bid of approximately $20.5m, which was the lowest of the three the city received. Canby, Oregon's Ward-Henshaw Construction Company, Inc., and Emery & Sons Construction Group LLC of Salem also bid.
Vancouver Public Works Department's water engineering manager, Tyler Clary, said he was glad to give the job to someone local. Contractors working on projects like this can use poster printing to create warning Signs to post at the job site.
The revitalization of Water Station 1 is an important project, since the facility supplies about a third of the city's water. The station is located in Waterworks Park, which is near East Fourth Plain Boulevard and Clark College, and has been operating since early in the 1900s. The station's water tower and two reservoirs together hold five million gallons of water, more than twice that of the second-largest facility, Water Station 9.
Phase two will consist of replacing both reservoirs to add more storage capacity, and a standpipe that holds one million gallons will replace the current water tower. In addition, Rotschy will upgrade the security system at the station, improve the bike and pedestrian paths, and construct a new entrance. The entire project should be finished in 2022.
