An unusual event in Vancouver will mark the turn toward spring.
The city’s Water Resources Education Center will be the location of the upcoming Winter Solstice Sunset Walk. In the Northern Hemisphere, the Winter Solstice is the year’s shortest day; every day following the Solstice is slightly longer, until the calendar reaches the Summer Solstice, the longest day.
The upcoming walk will begin in mid-afternoon and follows the north bank of the Columbia River. Participants will walk approximately 1.5 miles on a combination of paved paths, sandy beaches, and uneven terrain. It will be growing dark by the time the outing is finished.
Pets are not to be brought to the event, and young people must have an adult companion. In addition, the walk’s organizers hope for it to take place no matter what the weather throws up. However, if weather becomes truly unsuitable for outdoor activities, organizers will notify registered participants as soon as possible. Still, participants should plan to dress for chilly, wet weather. Organizers of this type of event can use flyer printing to create handouts for participants, including a map of the route and potentially explain facts about the solstice.
The walk will take place on the Solstice, December 21, from 3.00pm until 4.30pm. The center is at 4600 SE Columbia Way. Although the event is free, anyone who plans to attend needs to register.
