Environmental event to start the year in Vancouver

Vancouver, Washington, prides itself on maintaining the natural environment, and is demonstrating that commitment with an upcoming event.

Take Root: A Community Planting Day for Environmental Equity is on the schedule, and anyone interested is encouraged to check out this opportunity.

AmeriCorps members and the City of Vancouver are joining up to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., by planting native plants and trees throughout the urban area, in Sam Brown Park. In part, the day will promote equal access to green spaces in the city, and will begin with a conversation about racial and environmental justice. The participants are Dr. Desiree Hellegers and Dr. Julian Ankney, both with WSU Vancouver. Dr. Hellegers is the Director of the Collection for Social and Environmental Justice, and Dr. Ankney serves as Campus Director of Native American Programs. Hot drinks and snacks will be available during the event.

In addition to snacks, water, tools, gloves, and appropriate training will be provided. The outing is family-friendly and suitable for people of all ages and abilities. Volunteers should wear closed-toe shoes and long pants, and dress for changeable weather.

Planting events have proven to be very popular in Vancouver, and since space is limited, anyone who wants to attend needs to register in advance.

Take Root is January 15, Martin Luther King Day, from 10.00 am until 1.00 pm, at Sam Brown Park, 5722 Montana Lane. Organizers of events like this can create instructions for participants by using flyer printing.
