Vancouver, Washington, is known to residents as the ‘Couve’ and they can look forward to a celebration of hot rods and muscle cars known as ‘Cruise the Couve’. However, the annual event might not be on the schedule this year were it not for the efforts of downtown businesses.
The drive was once called ‘Cruise the Gut’, a term common to all communities who stage this kind of event (though nobody seems to know where it originated). However, the principal sponsor and organizer pulled out, putting the Cruise in jeopardy. Rather than letting it die, however, businesses including the Uptown Barrel Room, Vancouver Pizza, Zzoom Media, Tip Top Tavern, and Salmon Creek Outfitters stepped into the gap. They also changed the name, making this the inaugural year of Cruise the Couve.
Trap Door Brewing's Bryan Shull said he and other business owners were proud of the efforts they and other community members put into saving the event, which is extremely important to merchants downtown. For many, the Cruise is their biggest event in the year.
Although unofficial, the route will be familiar to cruisers who have been doing this for years. They will most likely start from Main and 27th Streets, then drive south along Main into downtown.
People who want to Cruise the Couve will be able to do so from 10:00 am until 10:00 pm this Saturday, July 15. Events like this can benefit if organizers display Banners along the route to guide drivers and add to the fun.
