Mill Plain Boulevard, one of Vancouver’s busiest corridors, could be getting a new bus rapid transit service, according to an article in the Columbian.
The Board of Directors of C-Tran recently approved a contract worth $1.54m with Vancouver-based HDR Engineering Inc. The firm will provide designs for the first phase of the effort to put new service on Mill Plain, known as the ‘Mill Plain Boulevard Bus Rapid Transit corridor’.
The first phase could take a year, and will include an environmental analysis, outreach to stakeholders and the public, choosing possible station locations and route options, and other issues, as part of determining preferred alternatives. Once the alternative is chosen, phase two will begin.
Bus rapid transit is designed to operate as efficiently as possible; it uses 60-foot buses rather than traditional units, which are 40 feet long. Passengers pay before they board, and the use of special signals allows these buses to jump the line at certain stop lights.
Part of the impetus for building the Mill Plain line comes from the success of a similar bus rapid transit effort on Fourth Plain, which increased ridership by 45% after it when into service, replacing two traditional bus routes.
Projects like this can have a citywide impact, so officials could consider working with a brochure printing company to create Booklets that keep residents updated on the status of the work.
