Vancouver tidies up for spring

Vancouver is looking for volunteers to give the city its annual spring cleaning.

The yearly Spruce the Couve event is hosted by the Parks Foundation of Clark County, the Hilton, Vancouver’s Downtown Association, and Vancouver’s Volunteer Programs department. Volunteers will work in teams cleaning up the downtown area, while others plant flowers in Esther Short Park, which is the oldest public square in Washington State. People of all ages are welcome to take part.

Organizers note they are committed to accessibility and have ensured the locations are available to wheelchair users. However, they note that the downtown and Esther Short Park have a lot of traffic, both cars and pedestrians, and are often noisy. Those who plant flowers might have to stoop, bend, or even kneel on the dirt, using small hand tools. Those who are doing a clean-up around downtown might be equipped with a grabber and could lift as much as ten pounds. When events like this are planned, organizers can use flyer printing to create instruction sheets for participants.

Spruce the Couve for 2025 is scheduled for May 10, from 9.00 am until 11.30 am at Esther Short Park and nearby areas. Young people under 18 must bring a signed consent form for a minor, while an adult will need to accompany anyone under 13. Organizers also urge anyone with physical limitations who wants to participate to advise in the RSVP so they can find an appropriate activity.
