Unique sewing class in Spokane Valley

A special sewing class has been scheduled in Spokane Valley.

A two-day class that will enable sewers to finish a bunad—or start a new one—is now available in Spokane Valley. The bunad is the name given to traditional Norwegian garb, and particularly reflects the elaborate embroidery used to create this style of clothing.

A lady’s bunad is comprised of a skirt or jumper, plus a vest, blouse, purse, apron, small hat, and black shoes with silver buckles. Colorful flowers are embroidered on the dress, and silver or gold jewelry, called Solje, crafted in the shape of spoons, dangles as a pendant or earrings. The men’s version comprises jacket, shirt, vest, knicker-style trousers, and black shoes with silver buckles.

The event host is Bunad Creations, whose experts will teach class members how to create this clothing using materials from Norway, including cottons, silk brocades, damasks, and fine wools, and following traditional methods. Flyer printing can be easily used to create instructional sheets for events like this.

Norwegian culture is celebrated throughout the Pacific Northwest with organizations such as the Sons of Norway playing an important part in the effort.

The class is scheduled for May 1 and 2, from 9.00 am until 5.00 pm both days, at Bunad Creations. The studio is in the Greenacres neighborhood of Spokane Valley. As only four students will be accepted, interested parties should register as soon as possible.
