Both residents of Spokane Valley and visitors to the city will have something to look forward to this summer, as the city has received funding to add new features to two of its parks.
The Washington State Department of Commerce has appropriated $539,320 for the city to use to finish amenities in the section of the Appleway Trail that has already been completed, which runs between Pines Road and University Road. The funds appropriated, as well as additional money supplied by the city, will be used for a drinking fountain, benches, trees, landscaping and grass to match the trail's newer sections, and a restroom to be located at University Road.
When the first part of the trail was built in 2015, there wasn't enough money to add amenities. Other sections were finished and benches, landscaping, grass and similar items were added at the same time. Now, the older part of the trail will catch up.
More improvements are coming to Browns Park, which will get a new dot for skateboarders; two picnic shelters, one small and the other large; new fences; a restroom; and a lighted walking path. A storage building will also be renovated. These improvements join the volleyball courts, basketball court, and splash pad that were added in 2016. The improvements are part of the master plan for Browns Park.
Officials who authorized improvements like this can use poster printing to create new Signs for the parks.
