Officials recently revealed the Spokane Valley’s schedule for street sweeping, which will help avoid clogging stormwater drainage systems.
Residents are asked to make sure that no debris or leaves from their property ends up in the road, and if it does, to remove it. They are also asked to move items like bicycles and basketball hoops so street sweepers will be able to clean the streets more efficiently. Motorists are urged to be cautious when passing or approaching the street sweepers.
Sweeping the streets in the fall helps remove sediment, pine needles, leaves, and other debris. This keeps road grates and inlets clear, reducing flooding of the streets, which may cause hazards for drivers as well as damaging the road. Removing debris also means stormwater facilities will not be overwhelmed, and it keeps pollutants from reaching the ground and surface water, as well as the air. Removing pollutants by sweeping up debris helps Spokane Valley meet the standards it has set for water quality.
Water standing in the road could mean a clogged drain, so residents are asked to report the issue to the city.
The street sweeping will start October 28, weekdays from 7:00 am until 5:00 pm. It is expected that the sweeping will continue through the month of November, depending on the weather. Flyer printing can be used to create mailers to explain issues like this.
