Spokane Valley receives funding to complete project

Rod Higgins, the mayor of Spokane Valley, said the city had received some “great news” recently, according to an article on the KXLY website.

The city has received over $9m in federal funding from the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery Discretionary Grants. The money will give the city enough to finish the $19m project to rework the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) crossing at Barker Road.

The project is vital to the future economic success of the city, since Barker Road is a main route leading to about 600 acres of property that the city plans to develop for industrial use. Approximately 4,290 vehicles use the road daily. The BNSF mainline crosses Barker Road near SR 290, and the railway carries anywhere from 30 to 50 trains daily, resulting in delays in road traffic. The new configuration could cut as much as 2.5 hours off the time cars spend waiting for trains.

The project will rebuild Barker Road so that it passes over the BNSF tracks, and Wellesley Avenue will be rerouted so that it connects with Barker Road after it has been rebuilt. In addition to eliminating wait times, creating the overpass will improve safety and traffic flow, since the overpass means road traffic will no longer cross the tracks directly.

Since projects like this have a far-reaching impact, officials might work with a flyer printing company to create a mailer for residents.
