Spokane Valley considers tourism facility options

Spokane Valley has funds from its lodging tax in the amount of $1.8 million, and now has to decide how specifically to use the money. Although the funds are earmarked for developing a tourism facility, the exact type of project has not been decided.

In 2016, the city hired Community Attributes, Inc., a consulting firm, to study the economic impact of a number of potential projects aimed at tourism. These included expanding the CenterPlace Regional Event Center, making improvements to Browns Park, erecting a sports complex close to the HUB Sports Center, improving Balfour Park, improving the Spokane County Fairgrounds, or devoting funds to arts and trails.

Spokane Valley officials narrowed the choices down to three: building a sports complex close to the HUB, improving the fairgrounds by building a special venue there for events and trade shows, or expanding CenterPlace Regional Event Center.

Each option has generated comment from officials. The sports complex project to stand near the HUB would bring needed playing fields to the city, but would actually be outside the city limits, meaning revenues would go to someone else. The Event Center already provides meeting/event space that brings in considerable revenue, so expanding there would be logical. Several members of the council have said making a choice is extremely difficult, and discussions are ongoing.

Officials in situations like this can use flyer printing to keep residents informed of developments.
