A class in a craft that has been practiced for centuries will soon be available near Spokane Valley.
Mel Hewitt will be the instructor for a class in bookbinding. The book to be bound is a journal, and to finish the project, students will begin by learning how a text block is sown. A text block is the block formed by the inside pages when they are cut and stacked, and is separate from the dust jacket, end papers, boards, and covers.
Students will also learn how to measure for the covers, design a decoration for the cover, and finally, learn two gilding methods, foil and blind. Foil gilding refers to the practice of putting metallic foil on the edges of the pages. Blind gilding uses a tool to make an impression in the leather before any gold is added. Events like this are good occasions for participants to exchange Business Cards.
Other topics on the agenda include paper grain, trimming and squaring text blocks, and the history of gilding. Hewitt will bring her own brass tools to add to those already at the shop. This will give students a broader range of decorative options to choose from.
The workshop is set for June 12, from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm, at the Spokane Print & Publishing Center on Ash Avenue in Spokane. The event is in person, meaning masks are required and social distancing practices will be enforced.
