Parking study conducted in Spokane

Last year, Spokane officials asked residents to share their thoughts on parking in the city, and now the results of a study have been released.

The recommendations have the largest impact on street parking, where officials could work with Print shops to create signage about the new policies. There are 37,000 parking spaces in downtown Spokane. Of these, only 15 percent are on the street, the rest are in parking structures or parking lots.

Consultants studied the situation in the University district and the city's downtown and have made a number of recommendations in the study, which is known as the 2019 Downtown Parking Study Plan. The plan makes suggestions to update Spokane's policies and the way it manages parking and would also like to see the demand reduced for parking spaces overall. They would also like to make it easy for drivers to find and use parking spaces, which should help people visiting from nearby suburb Spokane Valley.

The first suggestion is to increase the length of time people are allowed to park on the street, from two hours to four hours. The area affected would be between 4th and 2nd avenues, south of Riverside and west of Monroe.

In addition, spaces currently marked as all-day parking would be reduced to four hours, and all three-hour spots would have an hour added to make them into four-hour spaces.
