New apartments are going up in northwest Spokane, to provide housing for homeless families. The complex is the work of Catholic Charities, a non-profit organization that has already built a similar facility in Spokane Valley proper.
One resident of the Spokane Valley complex lives there with her husband and three children, and credits having a stable place to live as the key to the family's success. A runaway and former addict, the resident lived on the streets for almost 20 years. She turned her life around when she had children, and the safety she found in a permanent housing situation has allowed her to start thinking about the future.
The new complex will have 75 units designed specifically for families. Since they are being built with families in mind, they are one-, two-, and three-bedroom units. A family's income determines the rent they pay, but in no case are they ever charged more than 30%. Speaking for the organization, Jonathan Mallahan says they intend to keep building housing to make sure people have save living spaces. He added that having a home provides people with a degree of dignity.
Construction should be complete and the complex open to tenants in November, 2018. Interested persons can apply for housing at the charity's website.
Projects like this are important to everyone, so officials might want to work with a brochure printing company to create Booklets describing the housing.
