An iconic seasonal work will be performed soon in the Spokane Valley area.
The Spokane Symphony is presenting “The Nutcracker,” in five performances over four days. The State Street Ballet, based in Santa Barbara, will perform. The California company will be joined by over 75 dancers from the local area, with the Spokane Symphony playing Tchaikovsky's popular score live. The Martin Woldson Theatre at the Fox, a short drive from Spokane Valley, will be transformed into a wonderland for this production.
The ballet, which is now familiar to everyone is based on a story by E.T.A. Hoffmann, who wrote "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King" in 1816. In the original, the Nutcracker, the favorite Christmas toy of a girl named Marie Stahlbaum, comes alive and battles the Mouse King. After his victory, the Nutcracker takes Marie to visit a magical kingdom. In 1844, Alexandre Dumas retold the story, leaving it virtually unchanged, and it is Dumas's version that Tchaikovsky set to music in 1892.
The ballet will be performed at 7:30 pm this Thursday, December 5; 7:30 pm on December 6; 2:00 pm and 7:30 pm on December 7; and at 2.00 pm on December 8. Morihiko Nakahara is conducting the Spokane Symphony, and Rodney Gustafson is handing the duties of Artistic Director for the ballet. Gustafson appeared in a PBS special presentation of “The Nutcracker,” which starred Mikhail Baryshnikov. Flyer printing can be used to create programs for events like this.
