Renton recognized for stormwater project

The American Council of Engineering Companies of Washington (ACEC-WA) has awarded the city of Renton and Otak Inc., its contractor, the Gold Award for Uniqueness and/or Innovative Application of New or Existing Techniques. This Monroe Avenue Stormwater Facility which was completed in January 2025 was recognized by this award.

Local Print shops can help spread the news of such awards with mailers, Flyers, and other printed materials.

The facility is across the Jimi Hendrix Memorial and is now the stormwater infiltration facility that is the largest in western Washington. It is on three acres of land that was purchased by the city from the property owner so the project could be completed.

The facility has several cleaning stages and removes pollutants, debris, and dust from the stormwater of the 260 acres of the Renton Highlands. The clean water soaks the ground, recharges aquifers for groundwater, and feeds the Cedar River. It eliminated the need to use an old gravel pit that handled the heavy rain of December 2025.

This project was completed under budget, four months ahead of scheduled, and with minimal changes to the plan of construction. It represents a major milestone in how the city manages stormwater in an urban area that is growing significantly.

Funding for the project was made possible by the Department of Ecology which funded 85 percent of its costs through stormwater quality grant funds.
