Renton receives funds for transit improvements
A construction grant of $79.7 million has been awarded by the Federal Transit Administration of the United States Department of Transportation to King County Metro for a bus rapid transit line that will be between the cities of Kent, Auburn, and Renton and will provide frequent, reliable, and fast service.
The RapidRide I Line will improve the experience of riders and travel times over a bus line in King County that is heavily travelled but providing close to two miles of priority transit signal priority to speed riders and lanes that are exclusive to buses. Other features will include boarding at all doors, payment of fares off-board, and service during the weekdays every 10 to 15 minutes.
The route, which is 17 miles long, will have 41 new stations. These stations will offer improved lighting, shelters, and real-time information about arrivals. The route will also improve connections for riders in the regional system. It will be the tenth to open as part of the RapidRide network and add to a robust regional transit with about 63,000 rider trips per day.
Local print shops can help spread the word about such improvements in transportation with flyers and other printed materials.
The project will create about 50,000 jobs with job centers in Auburn, Kent, and Renton; the Auburn Municipal Airport; and two major medical centers with additional transit-oriented development at each station.
