Renton finance department receives special awards

Two Government Finance Officers Association awards were given to the Finance Department of the city of Renton. One award was the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award while the other was the Excellence in Financial Reporting Award.

The annual comprehensive financial report for fiscal year of 2023 was the reason for the city being selected for the Excellence in Financial Reporting Award. An objective panel judges the report to ensure it meets the high standards of the program. These standards include motivating potential users and user groups to read the report and communicating in a clear fashion its financial story.

The commitment of the staff to meet the highest principle of government reporting was the foundation for being given the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award. A special recognition was made for the capital investment program. Guidelines recognized across the country for effective budget presentations needed to be met to receive this award. These guidelines assess whether the budget serves as an operations guide, a financial plan, a policy document, and a communications device.

The city develops the budget every two years. This process begins with a review by the council and the mayor of the current service levels in the city and projected revenues for the next two years to determine whether significant changes need to be made.
