Salmon to return to Olympia waters

Autumn has arrived in Olympia, and for many locals, that means they will be going to the nearby Kennedy Creek Salmon Trail to see the chum salmon arrive after their long trip inland from the Pacific.

To help celebrate the return of the salmon to area rivers, Salmon Saturday will be held at Swan Creek Park at 2820 Pioneer Way.

Yvonne Shevalier, who is a fish biologist with Metro Parks, noted that this is an excellent opportunity for kids to learn about the life cycle of salmon, and she has helped many children to see how the fish arrive at the same place where they hatched themselves to produce the eggs that will be the next generation of the species.

Shevalier further went on to say that parents who take their kids to see the salmon run should be prepared for the fact that after they spawn, it is the end of their life cycle and the fish will die. A booklet printing company can create small coloring Books for the younger kids that uses a fun format to give more information about the chum salmon

Russ Ladley, who is a resource protection manager with the Puyallup Tribe remarked if one wishes to see the fish they need to be as still as possible and it may take some patience, as they are very sensitive to any disturbance, such as the vibration of approaching footsteps.

The Salmon Saturday event is scheduled to take place on December 12 from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm.
