While many may be familiar with fungi, they may not know that these important organisms are all around them. Olympia residents are invited to lace up their hiking shoes and be part of a walk that has been planned for this fall, and it will give insight into this often hidden world.
The excursion, which will be led by two mycologists, will explore the role that fungi play in the local ecosystem. The cool and damp weather of fall can be an especially good time of the year to spot their fruiting bodies, and the group will try and spot as many as they can.
While the participants enjoy their hike through the autumn woods, they will learn about the plants and animals that call them home, and also how fungi are important to the growth of plants and the recycling of nutrients. Some plants depend on them for their survival, and these mycorrhizal associations will also be included in the discussion.
Those who register for the outing have been asked to meet at Watershed Park, and the start time for the event will be 12:00 noon. The facilitators will give some background information before the group heads out, and collecting baskets and field guides are highly recommended. Copies of fungi ID record sheets and other items for this sort of excursion can be prepared by local Print shops.
This opportunity to explore Olympia’s Watershed Park, while learning more about the organisms that call it home, will be offered on November 9. All ages are welcome. Get a Free Quote for Print Get a Free Quote for Copies
