Olympia encouraged to address insect invasion

For a variety of reasons, invasive insects can cause a lot of damage to native ecosystems, and Olympia residents are encouraged to take part in an online event that will be focused on this issue, from a community perspective.

The Washington State Department of Natural Resources will be working with the Washington’s Invasive Species Council to help municipalities and other jurisdictions develop action plans that are tailored to their own needs and situation. This “Urban Forest Pest Readiness Playbook” will be the focus of the workshop, and it will consist of three sections.

During the learning, the participants will work through the workbook, which includes self-assessment and other tools. Before this, they will have an opportunity to watch a pre-recorded webinar, and they will also be able to access additional resources and advice during virtual office hours, as well as field any questions they might have.

Even though an event may be switched to an online format, it's often important for organizers to keep in mind that many may people prefer using “hard copy” resources. Print shops can provide these, and these can complement webinars and other virtual workshops.

Counties, municipalities and other stakeholders that would like to “beef up” their readiness when it comes to invasive insects, plants and other species are welcome to register now for the opportunity. It will be taking place on October 14th.
