Growing mushrooms at home can be surprisingly easy, and it can also be a way to add more freshly harvested produce to the menu. Olympia residents who are interested in finding out how they can farm fungi right in their own home will soon have a chance to learn how they can do so, with an upcoming class to be held right in their own home area.
Olympia Food Co-op will be offering a Mushroom Growing workshop, and it will be led by mycology expert Loni Jean Ronnebaum. She will be discussing using Fungi Perfecti growing kits, and these can now be purchased at the Olympia Westside garden center.
The techniques that will be taught during the two-hour-long event can be used whether mushrooms are being grown for culinary or medicinal purposes. They will be low-tech, sustainable, and ‘earth friendly’, and the organizers explained that the people who use them can become part of a larger network of individuals and companies that recognize the value of food security and organic growing methods.
The class will be taking place in the Downtown Community Classroom operated by the Olympia Food Co-op. An event like this can teach a lot of information in a small amount of time, and materials from a brochure printing company can make the process easier.
This step-by-step exploration of mushroom cultivation will be held on March 31. The Fungi Perfecti website includes further details.
