Special race planned in Kirkland

A race to commemorate a special day is coming up in Kirkland.

The annual Virginia Mason Mother’s Day 5K celebrates the holiday with a run in Kirkland. This year, the race will be a hybrid, with only the 5K held in person. The half-marathon will be virtual, and anyone who wants to run the 5K as a virtual race may do so. A kids’ race is also available.

The entry for in-person racers includes a finisher’s medal, a charitable donation, free professional photos that can be downloaded, and snacks after the race. In addition, chip timing will be used to record runners’ times.

In order to keep everyone safe, health precautions will be observed. These include wave starts, meaning groups of 10 will be started every three minutes. Those with faster times will be started first in order to lessen the chances of passing on the course. Banner printing can be used to create course markers for events like this.

Those who chose to run either the 5K or the half-marathon virtually may do so. They will receive a medal, shirt, bib, and sweet treat by mail. Children who run the Kids’ Virtual 1K will also be mailed a medal, bib, and sweet treat.

The in-person race is set for May 9. Those who chose to participate in a virtual run must finish it between May 7 and 10 at a location they choose. Then may then submit their results.
