Blues band on the way to Kirkland

A blues rock band with Chicago roots is set to visit Kirkland.

The Fabulous Thunderbirds were founded in 1974 and began their career in Austin, where they were part of the Blues scene for several years before signing with Takoma/Chrysalis Records. Later they signed with Epic Records, and then with Severn Records. Vocalist Kim Wilson has been with the band throughout its entire history.

Although they performed in Austin, they are most closely identified with Chicago Blues. Kim Wilson was a teenager when he listened live to Chicago masters like Jimmy Reed, Muddy Waters, and Johnny Shines. To his delight, he was able to sit in with some of the legends, appearing with Eddie Taylor when he was 18 or 19.

The Fabulous Thunderbirds have released 15 albums, one of which they only sell at shows. Their most recent was 2024’s “Struck Down,” which received two Grammy nominations. The band’s best-selling album is “Tuff Enuff,” which they dropped in 1986. It sold more than a million Copies, and the song “Tuff Enuff” was used in the films “Tough Guys” and “Gung Ho.”

Although album sales have been modest, the group has won the respect of other musicians, opening for megastars like Eric Clapton and The Rolling Stones. The Fabulous Thunderbirds will be at the Kirkland Performance Center on November 16. Performances like this are traditionally advertised in the area with Posters, which organizers can find at local Print shops.
