Lizzy & the Triggermen is a ten-piece jazz band with Lizzy Shapiro at the wheel. The group, which is based in Los Angeles, loves to mix the music of the swing era—the 1930s and 1940s—with more modern sounds.
Shapiro says that jazz was her first love. She particularly appreciated the artistry of the great jazz singers like Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald, but in high school, got sidetracked into studying opera.
She notes that she enjoyed the experience and performed at Tanglewood and in Italy and worked with amazing teachers and colleagues. However, she also realized that the life of a professional opera singer, with endless travel and a demanding schedule, was not for her. Her decision left her wondering what to do.
She tried her hand at comedy, but missed music, so she decided to create a band where she could be herself, a woman who loves wearing beautiful gowns, singing jazz, and not playing by the rules. The formula has resulted in a group that routinely provides crowd-pleasing shows, with many fans wearing fashionable clothes to the performances. A review calls her:
