Running festival set for Kirkland

An upcoming run in Kirkland gives participants a choice of distances to cover.

The Bridle Trails Winter Running Festival is unique. Instead of starting early in the morning, these races begin in the afternoon and continue after sunset, giving the event the special feeling that comes from being outdoors after dark.

Runners have a choice of running a 50K solo, a 50K pair, or a 50K relay race. They can also opt for shorter distances: 5, 10 or 15 miles. The course is a loop that covers 5.1 miles, and all participants will use the same trails, following them clockwise round the edge of the park. White and orange streamers will mark the course, and yellow glowsticks will be used after dark.

Organizers warn that some of the trails could be muddy, rutted, or rough, so runners need to watch their footing. In addition, it may be cold, so runners should dress for the weather and be prepared to get dirty and wet. Any runners who think they will be on the course after dark should wear a headlamp to light all the way to the finish line.

The race is at Bridle Trails State Park on January 11, and all the races begin at 3 pm. Sunset that day is 4.41 pm, meaning the races will continue into the darkness. Organizers who plan to use streamers at events like this will often contact Print shops to create them.
