The Kirkland City Council recently selected Penny Sweet to serve out the remainder of Mayor Amy Walen's term, through the end of 2019. Sweet is currently a member of the council.
Sweet has been active in Kirkland since she moved to the city in 1985, along with her husband, Larry Springer, who is a state representative. They own The Grape Choice, a small wine shop in Kirkland, and have been operating the business for 31 years. Sweet is a member of the chamber of commerce, where she sits on the committee for public policy.
Jay Arnold, Kirkland's deputy mayor, said Sweet's selection was a good decision, as she has proven to be a leader on issues of public safety, and her involvement with the community has given her the connections she needs to help Kirkland thrive. When changes like this take place, members of the organization could create appropriate Letterheads for the incoming individual as a welcome gift.
Sweet began her career of public service in 1999, when she founded the non-profit organization Celebrate Kirkland, Inc., which organizes the city's 4th of July events. Since 2013, she has been instrumental in organizing the annual tree lighting, which takes place during Winterfest. Sweet is also involved with such groups as the Kirkland Library, and the Kirkland Art Center.
Sweet started her first city council term in 2010, and has been deputy mayor twice, in 2010-2011, and 2014-2015.
