New year gives rise to new exhibit

Currently on exhibit at the Kirkland Arts Center is a show titled ‘Slash and Burn’.

Known as an agricultural method that cuts and burns down all vegetation on a plot of land so as to allow for fertility and new crops to grow, ‘Slash and Burn’ enables the artists in the exhibit to take the concept and apply it to art. They use char and soot as media, then use techniques like slicing, tearing, sawing and cutting, as well as and the heat of burning, cauterizing or melting, to create their projects.

There are eight artists that are participating in this exhibit, and each demonstrates a different approach to the theme. The works range from organic, austere, calm, and cerebral to rich, buzzing, sensual, and geometric, with many variations in between.

There will be two free demonstrations during the month, where the artists will show the techniques they used in creating their work. The first will be from 6:00 pmto 9:00 pm this Thursday, January 7, titled ‘Burn’, and it willshow heat-related methods such as encaustic. The second will be from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm on January 28, titled ‘Slash’, and highlights the art of cutting.

The exhibit closes at the end of the month, so the Kirkland Arts Center may be using local Print companies to create Flyers and other materials that can be distributed to those in the community to attract them to this unique exhibit.
