Kirkland residents are invited to be stewards of a local resource, thanks to an upcoming Green Kirkland event.
Green Kirkland is dedicated to developing a healthy system of parks in Kirkland, and keeping the community engaged in the effort. The upcoming event will take place at Juanita Bay Park, where volunteers will improve the habitat by taking away invasive plant species such as ivy and blackberry. They will also help plant native plants, and engage in stewardship activities such as weeding and mulching.
People of all ages and skill levels are welcome, and training and tools will be provided. Since this is an outdoor event, it will take place no matter what the weather is like. For safety, only shoes with closed toes are acceptable. They can be sneakers, tennis shoes, or boots, but not sandals.
It is also suggested that volunteers wear clothes they do not mind getting muddy and dirty, with long sleeves and long pants for protection. They should have sun protection and/or rain gear as needed, dress in layers, bring garden or work gloves, and bring snacks and water, as none will be provided. Masks are also recommended, especially when it is not possible to separate, but they are not mandatory. However, pre-registration is required.
Juanita Bay Park’s volunteer stewards will work from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm on Sunday, November 13. Organizers of events like these can help volunteers by using banner printing to create directional signage to the starting point.
