The Washington Family and Consumer Science Educators recently selected Genevieve Menino, a family and consumer sciences teacher at Juanita High School in Kirkland, as Teacher of the Year.
At a special luncheon in Spokane at the Davenport Grand Hotel, she was recognized with this honor.
Those teachers who provide outstanding technical and career education programs in consumer and family sciences for young people are those recognized by this award. Those who have made significant contributions to programs that are unique, innovative, and novel, and that improve the skills of youth in family and consumer skills, are the ones who receive it.
Having been with the Career and Technical Education department at Juanita High School for the past four years, and served as its Team Leader, Menino has incorporated Next Generation Science Standards into the curriculum of food science, worked with the local health department so that certain food classes at the high school would be able to receive Washington State Food Worker Cards, and incorporated off-site lab experiences for the Child Development Classes.
Menino also collaborates with teachers in other departments so that common core standards are integrated into the family and consumer science curriculum.
