The City of Kirkland is planning to hold an open house so residents can get an advance look at the improvements being planned to 124th Avenue Northeast.
Plans call for the avenue to be widened to five lanes between Northeast 124th and 116th streets, and city officials want to show residents how this construction will make travel in the area easier for bicyclists, pedestrians, and drivers alike. Officials developing projects like this can use flyer printing to create handouts for open house visitors, showing the work in detail.
Since January of 2018, consulting engineers and staff have worked on redesigning the road, widening it from three lanes to five, and adding wide sidewalks and bicycle lanes at sidewalk level. Changes to the 124th Avenue corridor also include improved landscaping and street lighting, and bus stops that are more accessible. City staffers except to finish the design late in 2019, and start construction in 2021. The exact start date will depend on acquiring the right-of-way, and setting up the funding mechanism, although the funds have already been awarded.
The open house is set for February 12, from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm, at the Kirkland Justice Center, which is located in Totem Lake. At the open house, residents will be able to view various concepts of the design, and give their feedback about them. Residents can also see the concept online immediately.
