Kirkland's beautiful Marina Park on Lake Washington, was the site of the annual Winterfest. The City of Kirkland and the Kirkland Downtown Association (KDA) started the holiday season with its December 1 event, which included lighting the city's Christmas tree.
The evening, which is family-friendly, also provided many opportunities for people of all ages to have their photos taken with Santa Claus, and to ride down a sledding hill. Food trucks were on hand to serve delicious treats, and there was entertainment as well as live music. If that weren't enough, Keiko, a llama, and a favorite of Kirkland residents, was also on hand so people could have their pictures taken with her.
Hot cocoa was also available for free, served by members of the Kirkland City Council and Jay Arnold, the deputy mayor. Hundreds of people and families turned out to enjoy the hot chocolate, along with the rest of the activities. Organizers of events like this could work with a poster printing company to create Signs directing people to various locations at the park.
There was an after party following the tree lighting, at which ugly sweaters and karaoke were featured; the party was held at Wilde Rover, an Irish pub and restaurant in downtown Kirkland.
The donations and proceeds from the ticket sales went to help fund Winterfest itself, as well as the lights found throughout Kirkland's downtown.
